The Bodycon Dress Without the Trashy Look

The body con dress doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. This longtime favorite of the high fashion world has kind of taken a nose dive in recent years because it’s become so popular. The body con dress was introduced by Azzedine Alaia in the early ’80s and went on to become an iconic garment from that and the following decades. We saw  a surge of body con dresses in the early 00′s as people like Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan started wearing them.

Because the body con dress is now associated with Las Vegas clubwear, cheap shoes and overly-bleached hair, it’s natural for you to look at a dress of this variety and think one thing – trashy. That’s the normal reaction from most people when they think of body con dresses being worn in public. It isn’t easy to wear one of these dresses without bordering trashy territory, but we say look to the supermodels of the ’90s to get the look right.

Choose a solid dark color. Sure, Cindy and Naomi wore Alaias in coral, but face it – they’re Cindy and Naomi. For the rest of us, those bright or jewel tones in a body con dress can look over-the-top and garish. Stick to black, shades of gray, navy, eggplant, kelly green or any other dark color. Solids are also a great place to start if you’re new to body con dresses. Those with too many details can often look cheap, especially if the details are poorly done (which is likely when dealing with cheap clothes).

Make sure the fit is on. The fit of a body con dress should be perfect. Now, because most are a mix of poly/Spandex/Lycra, they will fit the majority of people in the body. What we’re talking about are straps and the bust area. Make sure the straps don’t pucker when they meet the top of the bust, and make sure the dress doesn’t pull on the sides or center of the bust. This makes the dress appear way too tight and it isn’t in a sexy way.

Choose your accessories wisely. The focal point of this look is the body con dress and your curves. Look back to Claudia and Iman. Were they loading on the accessories when wearing a body hugging mini dress? Nope. Less is more when it comes to accessorizing a body con dress. The dress is making a statement, so keep it simple with one thick cuff or big earrings to add to the look. Many of the supers went completely bare when it came to accessories. Cindy often wore a low tight bun with the body con dress and stiletto heels. This minimalist look kept things sleek versus overpowering or competing with the dress.

Look to your makeup. The supers were fans of bold brows, flawless skin and a major red lip with body con dresses. We aren’t saying be a literal interpretation of the ’90s, but it’s smart to take a few of these tricks. A low tight ponytail and strong brows with a glossy nude lip is a great way to update the look without making yourself look like a Kardashian.
